Checking for reading understanding After your child has read a a few paragraphs or chapter of their reading book, ask them to sum it up in just one or two sentences. If they can explain it clearly, you know they’ve understood — and if not, you can gently go back and puzzle it out together. It’s a simple way to keep track of how well the story is making sense.
